Personal trainer tips: If you're struggling to lose body fat

I want to address something that I’ve seen time and time again with clients and prospective clients...

I will have someone come to me wanting to lose a stone or two. I’ll start to ask questions about diet and lifestyle.

You might be surprised to know that the MAJORITY of them report essentially a solid diet or undereating. But if this was the case (in most situations), body fat loss would be the natural result of a great diet or undereating.

But here’s what I’ve come to discover over my years working in the fitness industry…most of us are eating more than we think.

Unless you’re carrying a journal with you and literally entering every taste, bite, or lick that happens throughout the day, it’s VERY easy to underestimate how much you’re consuming.

The simple truth is that if you’re not losing body fat (if that’s your goal), it’s because you’re eating more than you think. I’ve TOTALLY done this myself, so I get it!

If you REALLY want to get a handle on how much you’re consuming and create heightened awareness that will serve you going forward, here’s what you can do:

Carry a journal with you for 3 days of your normal life – where you’re going through a normal daily routine. I’d recommend including a weekend day in there as well. Don’t try to make any adjustments yet.

You’re simply observing what happens by writing everything down – even a little sip of something. Your only goal is to record everything, not make any changes.

Then, learn from this. What did you notice that you were unaware of? Where did you overdo it?

Based on this, you can not only make changes going forward but you will also have heightened awareness about your behaviours, which will lead you to easier and sustainable fat loss.
