The answer is (as with many things in life) it’s not quite as simple as ONE best exercise for burning fat. It’s a combination of the best ‘bang for your buck’ exercises and the intensity at which you choose to do them.
I’m afraid it’s a myth that doing a ton of squats will help you lose fat from your legs, or doing sit ups will give you a flat tummy. The best approach is doing exercises which use the bigger muscles groups and as many muscle groups at one time. This helps to increase the amount of energy you burn, and will help you to lose fat all over your body. This includes exercise like deadlifts, kettlebell swings, lunges, cleans, box jumps and press ups, to name a few.
So now we’ve got the specific exercises sorted, what about the intensity? The best intensity for fat loss is working to failure or for short periods of time above 85% of your max heart rate, followed by short rests. You should be lifting weights which really challenge you at the last couple of reps, so you can feel your muscles working. Or if you’re doing cardio exercises you should be pushing out of your comfort zone, with lots of breathlessness in the last few seconds before your rest.
This is without a doubt the best way to lost fat and we call it the ‘after burn’. Workout in this way and your body will be burning energy and fat at any accelerated rate for 24-48 hours afterwards. This is how we roll at Empowered Fitness!
