Fit in your 50s: Why it’s never too late to start!

Do you feel like it might be too late so start getting fit? The gym can be quite an intimidating place – full of 20 and 30 somethings jumping around in their Lycra and flexing their muscles! But there’s an ever-increasing number of women in their 50s jumping on the health and fitness wagon than ever before – even if they never did it in their 20s and 30s. We work with women just like this. And they inspire us every day!

Benefits of exercising at 50

As a woman heads in to her 50s, the importance of keeping strong and healthy becomes more important than ever. The metabolism starts to slow down and there’s a big change in hormone levels, which means that the waist line can start to expand, you’ll lose muscle tissue and there’s a decline in bone density too.

An exercise routine which combines weight training and cardio is perfect for keeping the body at optimum health – maintaining strong muscles and bones. Exercise also helps your blood flow and circulation which improves energy levels. Not to mention the huge mood enhancing benefits which exercise can bring to your day!

Tips for getting started

Prevention is better than cure, so it doesn’t matter where your health is right now or if you haven’t given it much thought, there is no time like the present to start laying down some new habits which will last a lifetime.

  • Build more movement in to your day. Walking rather than taking the car, get off the bus a few stops early, taking the stairs instead of the lift, take a friend’s dog for a walk.

  • Join a local gym or contact a personal trainer to help you start an exercise routine which incorporates both weight training and cardio, in a safe and effective manner.

  • Introduce more protein and vegetables in to your diet, and reduce the amount of refined sugars and alcohol you may be consuming.

Meet our client, Hilary (Age 51)

‘’I had got myself in to some bad habits of working too much, eating at the wrong time and doing no exercise of any description. Since starting at Empowered Fitness I have seen a big change in my body. Losing inches. I’m more toned and supple. I’m stronger and fitter than I have been in a very long time. I’ve also learned a lot about nutrition – what foods to eat and what to avoid. It’s a really good lifestyle wake up call, and I’ve learned habits which will last a lifetime’’
